  • What does Alcohol do to your body ?

In Health Tips On 13 June 2017

In my due experience, I have found people cannot stop themselves from using alcohol in their mundane activities. Is it beneficial or harmful? Yes, there are studies which have shown positive results of alcohol consumption.  Otherwise, we can say the more alcohol, the more liver disorders and calcium deficiencies. Alcohol is a chemical compound made from ethanol. It is classified as DEPRESSANT because it slows down the central nervous system, causing a decrease in motor coordination, reaction time and intellectual performance. At high doses, the respiratory system slows down drastically and can cause a coma or death. Once swallowed, a drink enters the stomach and small intestine, where small blood vessels carry it to the bloodstream. About2-8% of alcohol is lost through urine, sweat and breath, rest 92-98% of alcohol is absorbed. Out of this approximately 20% of alcohol is absorbed through the stomach and most of the remaining 80% is absorbed through the small intestine. The surface area of the human stomach is only a couple of square feet, but because the small intestine has finger like projections called villi, the surface area of the small intestine is thousands and thousands of square feet. Because of this fact, the small intestine is more efficient than the stomach at absorbing alcohol. To make alcohol absorption slow and steady into blood stream (BAC-BLOOD ALCOHOL CONTENT) must rise slowly-slowly. To maintain this track, one must try to keep alcohol in stomach, which is possible if our stomach is full and hence it unable to open pyloric valve, an opening between stomach and small intestines. The valve will be closed if our stomach is full. Keeping stomach full doesn%u2019t mean having very large and heavy meals with lots of carbohydrates but trying to refrain from toxicities.

  • The Importance of Eating Right as You Age!

In Health Tips On 12 June 2017

The pounds are creeping in and rigid diets aren't working. As weight loss becomes difficult, some foods also leave you feeling gassy, bloated and lethargic. It's time to set things with nutritious, high-energy foods that not only trigger weight loss but leave you feeling refreshed and energised.  Follow this food timetable and you are good to go! The early morning energizer  Recharge your body metabolism with a glass of water right after you wake up. For complete detoxification, add a spoonful of honey and lime in the water. You could also try some green tea or herbal tea which is high in antioxidants. Drinking fluids in the morning will hydrate your body, prevent fatigue and keep you going strong for the rest of the day.  The breakfast kick-start  Eating small and frequent meals ensures a steady supply of calories without causing sugar spikes and weight gain. For breakfast, a combination of protein and high fiber works wonders. Protein gives satiety and prevents that formidable early morning energy crash. Try poached or boiled eggs along with whole grain toast or oats as good breakfast options.        The mid-morning break  Around mid-morning, snack on some fruits or nuts. Nuts are a rich source of magnesium which gives you energy. Fruits have natural sugars that leave you feeling peppy and alert for a longer time. Stay away from coffee, tea, or fatty foods which can cause an energy slump and a sluggish metabolism.       The low calorie, light lunch Keep your lunch light. Stick to a fish sandwich, a wholesome soup, or whole grain pasta along with an apple. You will remain active the rest of the day and feel alerted.    The post-sunset meals  An evening snack of yoghurt milk/fruit juice or trail mix improves your intake of fatty acids. Post sunset, stick to steamed veggies and a side dish of fish.         So who said you're old? Get your food timetable in place today and watch your body lighten up to a younger you!

  • Nutrients and Hormonal Imbalance in Men

In Health Tips On 02 June 2017

Do you feel tired and irritated, suffer from a low libido and low testosterone levels, and seem to be losing hair along with your temper? Often people confuse these symptoms with signs of aging, but they can also be the cause of a hormonal imbalance in men. Though aging is a known trigger of hormonal imbalance, a poor diet, lack of exercise and an unhealthy lifestyle can also trigger hormonal imbalance. The good news is the hormones can be controlled and imbalances can be set right with a few changes to your diet. Getting the right amount of food and nutrition in the body can reverse your hormonal problem, and help you optimize your health. So, start making the following changes now. Include calcium-rich, healthy foods like milk, cheese, leafy veggies, almonds, broccoli and kale to your diet. Hormonal imbalances can cause kidney stones, fractures, and weakened bones; by increasing the intake of calcium-rich foods, you can keep all these side effects away. Increased consumption of Omega 3 fatty acids like oily fish, flaxseeds, chia seeds, walnuts, soybeans, tofu, winter squash and olive oil will help in maintaining the balance of the hormones in the body. Vitamin D is an essential nutrient which can help maintain a healthy balance of hormones in the system.  Milk, eggs, fish and cod liver oil are rich in vitamin D. You can also get Vitamin D by standing under direct sunlight for a few minutes every day.

  • Foods That Keep Cancer at Bay

In Health Tips On 02 June 2017

The dreaded 'C' word can attack in many ways, but did you know that your body too, has its ways to prevent and fight cancer? Follow these five simple dietary changes to build up immunity, resistance, and longevity.   Wholesome grains  By choosing whole grain and bran over white flour, you'll be making a small change with a big benefit. The high fiber content will cleanse the system and keep your insides fighting fit. Fit and fruity  A bowlful of fruits, like apples and pears with their skin on, add to your fiber intake. Most fruits contain phytochemicals and antioxidants that are cell-friendly. Blessed broccoli  Broccoli is a particularly heroic one, full of protective enzymes. Not only does it detoxify against dangerous elements, it also fights bad bacteria. Just don't overcook and kill the nutrients! Beat the meat  Regular intake of red meat is an absolute no-no. They're full of fat and very heavy to digest. White meats like chicken and turkey are the smarter choices. Better still, go fish!  Oils to go with  The lower the fat content the better, so go for olive or canola oil rather than normal vegetable or sunflower oil.
